About The Legion of Mary

The very first meeting of the Legion of Mary took place on September 7th, 1921 in Dublin, Ireland,

on the eve of the feast of Our Lady's Nativity.  Those present, including the Servant of God Frank Duff and

Fr. Michael Toher, began the meeting by kneeling, invoking the Holy Spirit and reciting the Rosary.

From this meeting came forth the Legion of Mary.

100 years later, the Legion of Mary is still thriving and has grown to over 2 million active members and

5 million auxiliary members worldwide, operating in approximately 170 countries.

We are an Association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of All Graces, have formed ourselves into a Legion ready for service,

enlisted in Mother Mary's army to engage in the spiritual battle for souls.

The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members

developed by prayer and active co-operation, under ecclesiastical guidance, in Mary's and the Church's work

of crushing the head of the serpent and advancing the reign of Christ.

Modelled after the fierce, disciplined, and courageous Roman army, the Legion of Mary is a force to be reckoned with in the Spiritual battle.  As disciplined, humbled, courageous and faithful soldiers of Mary, working in union with her and the Holy Spirit, the Legion of Mary tirelessly works towards the building up of God's Kingdom on earth for His Glory and the Salvation of Souls.

This is done through the formation of a consistent and steady Christian life of prayer, Scripture, Sacraments, and apostolic works with a special devotion to the Blessed Mother.

Inspired by the True Devotion written by St. Louis Marie de Montfort, the Legion of Mary seeks to make Jesus known through a devotion to His Mother, relying on the Holy Spirit to reveal God's Will for our lives.
